How do you finish the ridge?
Ridge finishing: a key point for the waterproofing and durability of your roof
When installing insulated sandwich panel roofing, the ridge finish is much more than a simple aesthetic detail: it is an essential step. It legitimately raises many questions, as the overall waterproofing, protection against leaks, and the longevity of the structure depend on it.
Here is everything you need to know to complete a ridge according to professional standards and ensure the durability of your Isotuiles installation.
Why is the ridge such a strategic area?
The ridge corresponds to the upper junction line between the two slopes of your roof. Due to its position at the top of the building, it is the most exposed area of your roofing. Without extremely careful finishing, even a roof with perfectly installed panels can develop critical defects in the medium or long term.
The risks of a poorly insulated ridge
- Weather: Direct exposure to driving rain, strong winds, and snow.
- Leaks: Water and air can seep into the slightest gaps.
- Pests: Potential entry points for birds, rodents, insects, or the accumulation of dust.
The crucial role of expanding foam
Regardless of the configuration type (simple ridge, double ridge, or specific adaptation to an existing framework), gaps naturally remain between the corrugations of the sandwich panels and the metal ridge pieces.
This is where applying polyurethane expanding foam comes into play. It is absolutely essential, because without it, the ridge cannot guarantee optimal waterproofing, even with a properly screwed-on finishing sheet.
5 reasons to use expanding foam at the ridge:
1. Total sealing
It perfectly fills all gaps and irregularities related to the relief of the panels (tile-effect).
2. Thermal continuity
It eliminates thermal bridges by connecting the insulation of the two roof slopes.
3. Waterproof barrier
It radically prevents the infiltration of water, air, and dust.
4. Pest protection
It blocks access under the roof to birds, wasps, and rodents.
5. Wind resistance
It improves the overall resistance of the roof by eliminating air intake zones (suction effect).
Case of double ridge and specific configurations
In the case of installing a double ridge (or double-slope ridge cap), the use of expanding foam becomes even more vital. This architectural configuration creates larger empty volumes under the finishing sheet. These are veritable "corridors" where air and water can circulate freely if the spaces are not treated correctly.
The same principle applies to all specific configurations (different slopes between the two sides, custom adjustments, complex roofs in renovation): any free space under the ridge cap must be filled before final attachment of the finishing piece.
Implementation: Best installation practices
To achieve a finish that is both technically effective and aesthetically clean, follow these expert recommendations:
- Preliminary application: The expanding foam must always be injected before the final installation and screwing of the ridge sheet.
- Uniform distribution: Apply the product continuously and evenly all along the ridge line, making sure to properly fill the hollows of the panel corrugations.
- Drying and trimming: Let the foam expand and harden completely (see the time indicated by the manufacturer). Once dry, the excess must be cut cleanly with a utility knife or sanded to allow for a flush and aesthetic installation of the metal ridge piece.
In summary
The ridge finish must never be neglected. The generous application of expanding foam into the gaps is the cornerstone of your project. It is the guarantee of ensuring long-lasting waterproofing, maintaining the insulation performance of your Isotuiles panels, and obtaining a reliable and durable roof over time.
