What is an air-to-water heat pump and how does it work?
An air-to-water heat pump captures heat calories from the outside air and transfers them to your heating circuit (low-temperature radiators or underfloor heating). For 1 kWh of electricity consumed, it produces 3.5 to 5 kWh of heat — this is the COP (coefficient of performance). It completely replaces your gas or oil boiler.
Is it really possible to have €0 out-of-pocket costs?
Yes, for very low-income households (ANAH Blue category). Since 2024, MaPrimeRénov' has paid a direct advance to the RGE artisan. Combined with CEEs and the eco-PTZ (up to €50,000 interest-free), the total grants can cover the entire cost of the quote. Your RGE installer will prepare the complete application.
What is the difference between an air-to-water and a geothermal heat pump?
Air-to-water heat pump: the most common, simple installation, average COP of 3.5–4.5. Geothermal heat pump: COP of 4–6, more efficient in extreme cold, but requires drilling (additional cost of €5,000 to €15,000). It benefits from slightly higher subsidy rates (up to 25% for higher-income households versus 20% for air-to-water heat pumps).
My gas boiler is recent; can I still qualify for subsidies?
Yes. The age of your current boiler is not an eligibility criterion. What matters is your status as an owner-occupier, the type of home (detached house), its age (over 2 years old), and your income. A new gas boiler does not reduce your rights to MaPrimeRénov' subsidies.
How long does the installation of an air-to-water heat pump take?
Installation generally takes 1 to 3 days depending on your home's layout. The time between signing the quote and installation is 4 to 10 weeks (including ANAH validation time). During the work, your existing heating remains in service until the heat pump is commissioned.
Does the heat pump work in extreme cold?
Yes. Modern air-to-water heat pumps operate down to −15°C to −25°C depending on the model. Below their minimum operating temperature, an integrated electric backup takes over automatically—which rarely happens in metropolitan France. The COP remains positive (> 1) even in very cold weather.
Can the Eco-PTZ be combined with MaPrimeRénov'?
Yes, without any income conditions. The zero-interest eco-loan allows you to borrow up to €50,000 over 20 years interest-free to finance the remaining balance after subsidies. Your bank will set it up in parallel with your MaPrimeRénov' file—ask for it as soon as you sign the RGE quote.
